Tackti-Kool 101 Gun Cleaning

Gun Cleaning the basics..and really only the basics

Adriaan and I decided to do a section on gun cleaning , why? Well we get asked on a monthly basis how to care for ones gun , not that we are experts by any sense but we do have a insane amount of guns our selves and we do care for them very well 🙂

We actually took it a bit further and decided to make a small vlog. Link here

Im going to approach this in 2 sections,Cleaning and Lubing

Cleaning your pistol is always good , I can’t think of any scenario where cleaning a pistol is a bad idea , well I lie , my Steyer 9mm hated it but I really think that is the exception, once clean she takes a couple of 100 rounds before behaving again.

My recommendation is always ballistol. It is my favorite cleaning substance by far and I have to confess I use it for pretty much on anything and everything  in my house and on my guns.

Now I am not saying drench your pistol in ballistol (see history here) but I see no real issue with that either . Typically start by dissassembling your pistol, take of the slide and remove the barrel. I usually run a couple of cycles of scrubbing brush then clean patch until I feel happy that the patch is clean. Debris has a tendency to collect inside the frame on all the small metal parts and crevices, I find that on my striker fire pistols that the slide release and extractor give issues if the are not well kept and regularly cleaned.

I like dropping the gun parts in the sonicator if I see the trigger and internals seem gunky, see the video how it vibrates the dirt of the gun, it is pretty insane, this is my go to for most of our older guns.

I like to once my gun is lubed and clean to put a small amount of oil on all the parts that get a lot of contact as I only fire most of my guns once in a couple of months and the rest of the time they rest in the safe

Lubing is not over complicated , there are usually wear marks inside the pistol where metal rubs on metal , this is your cue to where you want to apply some lube, once again use common sense but its a good idea to care for your gun, the goal is to reduce the friction on the metal on metal sections of the gun.

We also included a small section in the video to help illustrate where I like putting the lube. Im not overly particular about brand here, I think cost is mostly my consideration here as I have a lot of toys and all of them need a lot of love.

So in summary

  • Clean your gun as regularly as you can, the more the better at the start , I find it quite the zen excercise.
  • Lube your babies moving parts
  • And keep some oil on them to keep the rust at bay

Happy Shooting
